Tea has been a staple in the East for centuries. It is used as a beverage of choice and as a healing property. Now the secrets of tea have made it way to the west. Different teas have different taste and health effects. I’m going to walk you through the benefits of drinking tea.
Green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea are the main most known teas that have beneficial health properties. These teas come from a plant called Camellia sinensis, that is a native plant to China and India. The main component of these teas are called flavonoids, antioxidants that help with preventing cancer, heart disease and clogged arteries.
An alternative to coffee, all these teas also have caffeine and theanine, which affect the brain and seem to heighten mental alertness.
There are two ways tea leafs can be processed. Tea leafs can be fermented/oxidized or steamed. Each process has a different effect. Black teas and oolong teas are usually fermented/oxidized causing these types of teas to have less polyphenol content, which contains flavonoids. Here is a break down of all the teas and what they are good for.
